Asociación Anita signs a new agreement with the Molecular Oncology Laboratory to promote advances in liquid biopsy.
It is a joy to announce that Asociación Anita has signed a new agreement with the PCCB (Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona), to finance the material needed by the Molecular Oncology Laboratory to boost the amount of information obtained to date, through liquid biopsy in pediatric tumors.
Signing of the collaboration agreement with Dr. Jaume Mora, Dr. Cinzia Lavarino and Dr. Noelia Salvador.
Dr. Cinzia Lavarino, Chief Researcher of the Molecular Oncology Laboratory of the PCCB and her team explained to us what this new advance in the identification and definition of tumors consists of.
As it is performed in blood or cerebrospinal fluid without the need for surgery, liquid biopsy is less invasive for the patient than solid biopsy. In addition, as the liquid circulates through the body, it can give a global reference of the presence of the tumor, beyond the area where it has been detected, as occurs with a solid biopsy.
Liquid biopsy is something very new, as was solid biopsy in its day, and its potential as a minimally invasive tool for understanding a pediatric tumor is immense and very promising.
Consolidating liquid biopsy with the same resources as solid biopsy means being able to obtain the necessary information about a tumor while minimizing harm to the patient, in addition to being able to biopsy those tumors that are impossible to access with solid biopsy. Also, because it is so minimally invasive, it facilitates monitoring and more frequent follow-up of the treatment and its effects on the tumor.
Within the framework of the PCCB's Precision Pediatric Oncology Project (POPP), the Molecular Oncology Laboratory works in coordination with the Oncology Research Laboratory, the Pediatric Oncology team and the Anatomic Pathology service to give a full name to the tumor detected and to define the most appropriate treatment at each stage of its evolution.
Today, thanks to your support, a new path full of hope for any child or adolescent with cancer has been signed, we continue!
