Message from Siena's parents (patient) sent to Núria Bonet Julià, Music Therapist of the Associació Ressò de Musicoteràpia.
"You have left us with such good memories. How nice it has been to be able to share the beautiful music therapy sessions. There is not a day that goes by that we do not think of all that you have helped us and accompanied us during these two months. The melodies continue to sound among us in memory of the beautiful Maria".
MUSIC THERAPY IN THE SANT JOAN DE DÉU HOSPITAL OF BARCELONA
MUSIC THERAPY AT HOME
This project within the Pediatric Palliative Care Unit at Sant Joan de Déu hospital in Barcelona is funded by Asociación Anita, thanks to the support of many caring individuals.
Started in February 2021, its main function is to bring music and its benefits to the homes of infants and teenagers undergoing palliative treatment, through personalized music therapy sessions. These sessions allow children to express themselves and their emotions through music together with the whole family, generating unforgettable moments and favoring the sensory and neurological stimulation of the patient.
MUSIC THERAPY SESSIONS
This initiative, which aims to improve the well-being of the child and, in turn, that of the family that surrounds him and that will have to face his departure at some point, is also linked to a research study that aims to determine what impact music therapy has on sick children and their families: whether it can help to normalize their lives, experience significant moments of vitality, strengthen the family bond, etc.
Every day, a music therapist from Associació Ressò, visits two children in palliative treatment at home and for about three quarters of an hour, they sing songs and play different instruments.
Before and after the session, different data will be collected to assess the impact of this activity on the well-being of the child and the family. A total of 75 patients will participate in the research study, which will last 24 months.
BUDGET ALLOCATED: €25,000 per year
MUSIC THERAPY AT THE UNIVERSITY VALL D'HEBRON HOSPITAL
MUSIC THERAPY AT HOME AND IN-HOSPITAL
The Asociación Benéfica Anita and Vall d'Hebron university hospital have established a collaboration agreement with the Latir Association to carry out music therapy workshops for patients in the Comprehensive Pediatric Palliative Care Unit.
In collaboration with the "Asociación Latir: El Sonido de la Vida", Asociación Benéfica Anita implemented in May 2023 the "Music Therapy at home and in-hospital" project that uses music as a therapy for children and teenagers with advanced diseases and their families cared for by the Unidad de Atención Paliativa Pediátrica Integral (UAPPI) of Vall d'Hebrón hospital in Barcelona.
The Asociación Benéfica Anita will finance this activity, which will be carried out by therapists belonging to the Latir association. Dr. Andrés Morgenstern, Head of UAPPI, stresses the importance of fostering these artistic expressions in children during the final stage of their lives. He states that the arts can provide answers to the suffering that both patients and their families experience, allowing them to connect with their inner world.
The integration of this workshop creates a space where families can feel welcomed, and children can regain their sense of childhood, regardless of their medical condition. It also allows them to enhance their cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual capacities through music, in an environment of emotional support and well-being for both them and their families during this delicate stage.
MUSIC THERAPY
Music therapy in palliative care patients provides emotional, cognitive and physical benefits, including the reduction of pain and anxiety. At the Vall d'Hebron Comprehensive Pediatric Palliative Care Unit, a multidisciplinary team including music therapists assesses the patient's needs and uses responsive or active techniques to enable them to express emotions and leave a legacy before the end of life. Music therapy does not seek to cure the disease, but it does help to improve emotional well-being and acceptance of the situation for both the patient and their environment.
